It's Not Too Late For An Autumn Escape

8 tips for planning europe (6 x 8 in) (1)
Be Your Own Travel Agent With These Easy Tips

Europe has always held a special place in my heart. I was 13 the first time I traveled there, and I immediately fell in love with the history, the culture, and the sense of adventure around every corner. Now, in my 40s, I’m exploring the continent with my husband and our three children—ages 24, 9, and 7—hoping to share the same magic I felt as a young traveler.

Together, we’ve visited 14 countries, wandering through iconic cities, exploring vast landscapes, and standing at historic sites and battlefields. We’ve tasted foods unique to each region, discovered hidden gems off the beaten path, and learned countless tips, as well as a few lessons the hard way about how to make travel truly unforgettable.

One of the most important things I’ve learned is that booking your own vacation matters. Only you truly know how you like to travel, what you want to see, and where you want to be. By taking control of the planning, you can create a trip that perfectly fits your family’s interests, pace, and style. And the best part? It’s easier than you think. With these 8 tips, planning your European adventure can be simple, stress-free, and full of unforgettable moments. As an added bonus, you will earn all the points for booking it yourself.

Unlock Free Nights and Flights: Master Points & Miles Like a Pro

europe points

Families on a school calendar like mine often have no choice but to travel during peak season when cash prices skyrocket. That’s why diving into points and miles programs can be a game-changer.

By choosing the right travel credit card, understanding how to earn bonus categories, and learning how to perform award searches, you can accumulate points surprisingly quickly. And many people are shocked to discover just how few points it can take to fly a family overseas when you book strategically.

I personally use PointsYeah.com for all of my award searches. It helps me find the best redemptions and free flights for my family with just a few clicks. If you want to learn how you can earn free flights simply by using money you’re already spending, make sure to watch my video below—I break everything down step-by-step.

Slow Down to See More: The Art of Not Overplanning

europe itinierary

When planning a trip to Europe, it’s easy to fall into the trap of trying to see everything. Every city has iconic landmarks, world-famous museums, and experiences you don’t want to miss—and before you know it, your itinerary is packed from sunrise to sunset. But here’s the truth: Europe isn’t meant to be rushed.

Some of the most memorable moments happen when you slow down and let the culture unfold around you. Leave room to sip a cappuccino on a quiet street, wander through local markets, or linger over a long lunch; in many European countries, meals are meant to be savored, not squeezed between activities.

Build in breathing room. Plan fewer attractions each day, allow extra time to explore each city, and resist the urge to constantly be on the move. When you leave space in your schedule, you’ll experience more than just the highlights, you’ll feel the soul of the place you’re visiting.

You can always come back for the rest. But you’ll never get back the moments you rushed through.

Get Around with Ease: Europe’s Best Transportation Options

europe transportation (1)

Getting around Europe is part of the fun, and understanding your transportation options will make your trip easier and even more beautiful.

Renting a Car
If you want the freedom to explore the countryside, small villages, and scenic routes at your own pace, renting a car can be an unforgettable way to travel. Just make sure you have the required documents: a valid driver’s license, a passport, and in many countries, an International Driving Permit (easily obtained in the U.S. before your trip). Once you’re behind the wheel, you’ll get to enjoy landscapes that most tourists never see.

Taking High-Speed Trains
For traveling between major cities or between countries, Europe’s high-speed trains are often the best option. They’re fast, comfortable, affordable, and incredibly efficient. Instead of dealing with airport security and long check-ins, you can simply board, relax, and arrive right in the heart of the city. I recommend using the Eurail App to navigate between destinations. If you’re planning to travel between multiple countries, keep an eye out for my upcoming video where I’ll walk you through exactly how the Eurail Global Pass works. I’ll break down when it’s worth it, how to choose the right pass, and—most importantly—how to reserve trains and seats step-by-step so you can travel confidently across Europe.

Using Public Transportation in Cities
Within European cities, the metro and underground systems are reliable, inexpensive, and easy to navigate. They’ll take you everywhere you need to go without the stress of traffic or the cost of taxis. Most cities also have convenient trams and buses that make getting around a breeze.

Avoiding Taxis When Possible
While taxis exist everywhere, it can sometimes be difficult to tell which ones are legitimate, and tourists are occasionally overcharged. When possible, opt for Uber or other regulated rideshare services, which offer predictable pricing and added safety.

Don’t Forget to Walk
Finally, leave time to explore on foot. Europe is full of hidden gems—quiet courtyards, charming cafés, street art, local bakeries—that you’ll only discover by walking. Some of the best moments happen when you allow yourself to wander.

Sleep Smart: How to Choose the Perfect European Stay

europe accommodation

Where you stay can completely shape your European vacation, so it’s worth taking the time to choose the right accommodation for your family, your style, and your budget.

Start Searching Early
Europe is full of incredible places to stay, from boutique hotels and modern apartments to charming countryside homes—but the best options always book quickly. The earlier you begin your search, the more choices you’ll have and the better your chances of snagging a great deal.

Consider Your Budget (and Location)
Staying in the heart of the city is convenient, but it also comes with a higher price tag. If you’re traveling on a budget, look just outside the city center—but make sure your accommodation is within walking distance of a metro or train station. Public transportation in Europe is reliable, affordable, and efficient, so you’ll be able to reach all the major attractions within minutes while saving money.

Think About Your Needs – Every family travels differently

  • Visiting in the summer? Look for strong air conditioning—not all European properties have it.
  • Traveling with young kids? A pool can be a lifesaver after long days of sightseeing.
  • Need more space? A kitchen or living area can make a big difference during longer stays.

Knowing your must-haves ahead of time helps narrow your search and ensures a more comfortable trip.

Don’t Limit Yourself to Hotels
For families, traditional hotel rooms can get tight (and expensive) quickly. Instead, consider options like Airbnb, Expedia, or local vacation rental sites. These often offer full apartments or homes for the same price—or less—than booking two hotel rooms. Plus, having a kitchen can save money on meals throughout your trip.

Always Read the Reviews
Reviews are one of your best tools. Travelers are honest and specific about what they loved and what fell short. Pay special attention to comments about cleanliness, air conditioning, neighborhood safety, noise levels, and transportation access. Reviews can help you find a place that perfectly matches your expectations.

Arrive Confident: Know Your Destination Before You Go

europe research

One of the most disappointing feelings when traveling is realizing you missed something incredible in a city you just left. The best way to avoid that? Get to know your destination before you go. A little preparation can transform a good trip into a truly unforgettable one.

Start by figuring out what excites you most about the place you’re visiting, whether it’s history, food, art, shopping, architecture, or simply soaking in the culture. When you understand your “why” for choosing a destination, it becomes much easier to plan a trip that feels personalized, meaningful, and memorable.

Next, dive into research from multiple angles. Join social media groups dedicated to the cities you’re visiting—these communities are full of locals, expats, and fellow travelers who share tips, photos, and honest advice. Read travel blogs written by people who have spent real time in those locations, and watch YouTube videos created by travelers who walk you through neighborhoods, public transportation, hidden gems, and can’t-miss attractions.

Familiarize yourself with how the city works:

  • How do you get around efficiently?
  • Which neighborhoods offer the best experience?
  • What do travelers consistently love—or dislike?
  • Are there cultural norms you should be aware of?

Pro Tip – don’t be afraid to ask questions. Travelers love helping other travelers. Whether it’s a Facebook group, TikTok comments, a blog thread, or a subreddit, people are eager to share their experiences. No question is too small or too silly—often, the answers you receive can save you time, money, and stress.

A little curiosity goes a long way. The more you know before you go, the richer and smoother your trip to Italy (or anywhere in the world) will be.

Skip the Lines: Why Booking in Advance Saves Your Trip

europe booking

If you’re traveling to Europe—especially during peak season—booking your excursions and transportation in advance can save you money, stress, and disappointment. Popular tours, museums, and experiences often sell out weeks or even months ahead, and trains between major cities can fill up quickly during busy seasons. By planning ahead, you’re not only guaranteeing your spot, but you’re also avoiding the hassle of scrambling for last-minute options.

Booking early is also a major win for budget travelers. Many companies offer lower prices when you reserve in advance, and you can often take advantage of early-bird discounts or flexible cancellation policies. And the best part? That’s one less thing you need to pay for when you arrive—leaving more room in your budget for spontaneous treats, dinners, and souvenirs.

Pro Tip: Always check prices directly with the company or official organization first. While third-party apps and websites can be convenient, they are often more expensive and, in some cases, less reliable. Booking through official channels usually gives you the best price, clearer instructions, and better customer support if plans change.

Planning ahead means more peace of mind—and a smoother, more enjoyable European adventure.

Travel Smarter: Must-Have Apps Every European Traveler Needs

europe apps

Before heading to Europe, set yourself up for success by downloading the key apps you’ll rely on, and organizing them on their own home screen or in a dedicated travel folder. When you’re navigating new cities, catching trains, or communicating with tour guides, quick access makes all the difference.

Here are the most useful apps to have ready before your trip:

🚆 Eurail App
If you’re traveling between cities or countries by train, the Eurail app is extremely helpful. It shows route options, travel times, and connections across Europe. I’ll be sharing an upcoming video that explains the global pass and how to use it!

🗺 Google Maps
An absolute must for walking directions, public transit, and offline navigation. It’s especially handy in European cities where metros, trams, buses, and walking routes blend together. Stay tuned—I’ll also be releasing a video on how to maximize Google Maps when traveling.

💬 WhatsApp
Many tour guides, tour companies, small hotels, and even restaurants use WhatsApp as their primary way of communicating. It’s free, works internationally with Wi-Fi or data, and makes staying in touch simple.

🔐 Passport Storage App
Having a secure place to store a digital copy of your passport—such as in your phone’s Apple Wallet, Google Wallet, or a trusted digital document vault—can be incredibly helpful in the event of an emergency. (Always keep your physical passport secured as well!)

🏨 Accommodation Apps
Download the app for whichever platform you booked through—whether it’s Airbnb, Booking.com, Hotels.com, or another service. These apps make it easy to find check-in instructions, communicate with hosts, view reservation details, and get directions.

✈️ Airline Apps
Make sure you also download the app for each airline you’re flying. They allow you to check in, track your flights, access mobile boarding passes, and receive real-time notifications about delays or gate changes.

🗣 Translation Apps
Apps like Google Translate or DeepL are incredibly useful for translating conversations, signs, menus, and more. Be sure to download offline language packs for areas where service may be limited.

🍽 Restaurant & Food Apps
Discover great places to eat and avoid tourist traps with apps like TheFork, Yelp, or Tripadvisor. Many restaurants in Europe also allow reservations directly through these apps.

💶 Currency Converters
Apps like XE Currency and Currency Converter Plus make it easy to quickly figure out exchange rates so you always know what you’re spending.

🚕 Transportation & Logistics Apps
Depending on your destinations, you may also want:

  • Uber, Bolt, or FreeNow for rides
  • Rome2Rio for comparing travel options
  • Local public transportation apps for major cities (like Paris Metro, London Tube, or Rome ATAC)

Organizing these apps ahead of time and placing them in a dedicated folder makes your travel smoother, quicker, and far less stressful once you’re exploring Europe.

Spend Wisely: What You Need to Know About European Money & Payments

europe spending

One of the most common questions travelers have when planning a European vacation is how to handle money—cash, cards, exchange rates, and fees. The good news is that Europe is very card-friendly, but a little preparation can save you a lot of money and stress.

Start by using a credit card with no foreign transaction fees, as this will automatically give you the best exchange rate. When you need cash, skip the airport exchange counters and use a bank ATM instead, ideally with a debit card that doesn’t charge ATM fees. When paying, always choose to be charged in the local currency, not U.S. dollars—this avoids expensive conversion markups.

Remember that not every country uses the euro, so research the local currency before arriving. Keep a small amount of cash on hand for markets, cafes, and small purchases, but rely mostly on card payments. And finally, travel with at least two cards, let your bank know you’ll be abroad, and have digital copies of your cards stored securely just in case.

Pro Tip: Us Apple Pay – Many places across Europe (restaurants, shops, trains, and even small cafés) accept Apple Pay, making it one of the easiest and most secure ways to pay while traveling. Using Apple Pay means you won’t need to constantly pull out your wallet, worry about losing your card, or fumble with unfamiliar currency. Just make sure your card is added to your Wallet app before your trip, and you’ll be able to tap and go almost everywhere.

A little planning goes a long way in helping you avoid unnecessary fees and manage your travel budget with confidence.
