Montana

Montana is, without a doubt, God’s Country. Home to Glacier National Park and the legendary Going-to-the-Sun Road, it’s truly one of the most beautiful places our family has ever experienced. We believe Montana is one of the world’s hidden gems, a destination everyone should see at least once in their lifetime.

Know Before You Go

📅 Best Time to Visit

The best time for visiting Montana is late June through mid-September, when mountain roads are fully open and weather is warm enough for hiking and lake activities. July and August bring the best conditions but also the biggest crowds, especially in Glacier National Park. For fewer crowds and beautiful scenery, early fall (September) is a fantastic shoulder season with cooler temperatures and golden foliage. Winter is ideal mainly for ski travelers.

🧭 Regions of the State

Montana divides naturally into 5 travel regions. Northwest Montana is home to Glacier National Park and alpine scenery. Southwest Montana includes Bozeman and access to Yellowstone National Park. Central Montana features wide-open plains and historic sites. Eastern Montana is more remote and prairie-focused, while Western Montana (Missoula area) blends mountains, rivers, and vibrant college-town energy. Most first-time visitors focus on the northwest and southwest corridors.

💰 Budget Friendly Tips

Montana can be surprisingly expensive during peak summer, especially near major parks and resort towns. Book lodging 6–12 months in advance if you’re traveling between June and August, and consider staying just outside popular park gateways to find better rates. Because distances are large, fuel costs can add up quickly, so try to group activities geographically to minimize extra driving. To stretch your budget further, opt for rental homes or condos with kitchens so you can prepare some meals instead of dining out every day, this is especially helpful for families and longer stays. Traveling in late September or early June can also significantly reduce lodging prices while still offering excellent weather and scenery.

⚠️ Common Mistakes First-Time Visitors Make
  • Many visitors underestimate Montana’s size.  Drives that look short on the map can take hours due to the winding roads.
  • Trying to combine Glacier and Yellowstone in too few days, which leads to excessive time in the car.
  • Do not forget to get tickets ahead of time. Entrance to the “Going to the Sun” road requires an entry ticket and a National Park pass. The ticket must be purchased in advance and sells out quickly.
  • Not preparing for varying weather; mountain weather changes quickly, so layers are essential even in July.
  • Forgetting bear spray! Glacier is home to the grizzly bears, do not head into the park without it.
  • Approaching Wildlife: Never approach or feed animals, particularly bears and bison. Maintain a distance of at least 100 yards from bears and wolves, and 25 yards from other wildlife like bison and elk.
📝Additional tips
  • Be sure to wear proper footwear – Flip-flops are not hiking shoes in Montana. Rugged, broken-in hiking boots are essential to prevent injury on rocky terrain
  • Missing out on vehicle reservations for Glacier National Park’s Going-to-the-Sun Road can derail a trip. Book rental cars, lodging, and guided tours months in advance.
  • Don’t rely on cell services – Cell service is non-existent in much of Montana’s wilderness and rural areas. Download maps, bring a paper map, or carry a GPS device
  • Do not block traffic to watch wildlife – If you see an animal, use designated pull-outs. Do not stop in the middle of the road.
  • Pay attention to fuel needs – Gas stations can be far apart in rural Montana. Fill up when you can to avoid getting stranded.
  • Bring Bug Spray – In the summer, bug spray is a necessity for flies, mosquitos, and ticks.
  • Pick up trash – “Leave No Trace” principles are taken seriously. Clean up all trash and pet waste.
  • Follow food storage rules – Leaving food in tents or cars invites bears and can result in fines, destroyed property, or dangerous animal encounters.
🚗 Best Way to Experience This State

Montana is best experienced by car and road trip, as distances are large and public transportation is extremely limited outside major towns. Driving gives you the flexibility to explore scenic byways, national parks, and small mountain communities at your own pace. In cities like Bozeman, Missoula, and Billings, getting around is straightforward with a car, though downtown areas are walkable. For iconic park drives, plan full days rather than quick stops, Montana rewards slow travel.

⏱️ How Long You Really Need

To see Montana properly, plan 7–10 days minimum. A shorter 4–5 day trip works if you focus on one anchor area (usually Glacier or Yellowstone access). For a comprehensive first visit that includes both national parks plus scenic driving, 10–14 days is ideal. Families especially benefit from slower pacing due to long drive times.
