While Nevada is best known for Las Vegas and Reno, there is so much more to discover beyond the bright lights of its cities. From driving through striking red rock landscapes to taking in the breathtaking views of Lake Tahoe, the natural beauty here is truly unforgettable.

For families, this is a destination not to overlook. It has become one of our kids’ favorite annual trips, and for good reason. There is an incredible variety of experiences, whether you’re exploring the energy of the city or the wide-open beauty of the surrounding landscapes.

Know Before You Go

📅 Best Time to Visit

Nevada is a year-round destination, but the best time to visit depends on your priorities. Spring (March–May) and fall (September–November) offer the most comfortable temperatures, making them ideal for both city exploring and outdoor adventures. Summer can be extremely hot, especially in southern Nevada, with temperatures in Las Vegas often exceeding 100°F. Winter is perfect for visiting Lake Tahoe for snow sports, while Las Vegas remains mild and enjoyable.

🧭 Regions of the State

Nevada can be divided into a few key regions. Southern Nevada is home to Las Vegas and nearby natural wonders like Red Rock Canyon and Valley of Fire. Northern Nevada includes Reno and Lake Tahoe, offering a mix of outdoor recreation and a more laid-back vibe. Central Nevada is more remote and rugged, known for its “Loneliest Road in America” experience along Highway 50. Eastern Nevada features dramatic landscapes like Great Basin National Park, often overlooked but incredibly rewarding.

💰 Budget Friendly Tips

Accommodations: Las Vegas hotels can be very affordable midweek but expensive on weekends. Watch for resort fees, they add up quickly. Consider staying off the Strip for better value. Play for free “My VIP rewards” and earn free night stays.

Food: In vegas, eat at off-Strip for more affordable and authentic meals. Purchase beverages and snacks in local stores. Budget higher in tourist-heavy areas like Lake Tahoe

Activities: Many Vegas attractions are free (fountains, shows, walking the Strip). State parks typically have small entrance fees but offer great value. Book tours and excursions in advance to secure better pricing

⚠️ Common Mistakes First-Time Visitors Make
  • Underestimating distances between destinations
  • Visiting Las Vegas in peak summer without planning for the heat
  • Overpacking itineraries (especially in Vegas)
  • Not renting a car when exploring outside cities.
  • Ignoring resort fees when budgeting
  • Skipping nature experiences and only staying on the Strip
🚗 Best Way to Experience This State

The best way to experience Nevada is by car, as the state is vast and many of its most incredible destinations are spread far apart. While Las Vegas offers easy rideshares and walkability along the Strip, exploring beyond the city, like Lake Tahoe, Valley of Fire State Park, or Reno, requires a rental car. Road tripping is part of the experience, with scenic desert highways, mountain drives, and wide-open landscapes defining the journey. Within cities, walking and rideshare apps are the easiest ways to get around.

⏱️ How Long You Really Need

A minimum of 4–5 days is enough to experience Las Vegas and a nearby natural attraction. For a more well-rounded trip, 7–10 days allows you to explore multiple regions, such as pairing Las Vegas with Lake Tahoe or adding in national and state parks. If you’re planning a full road trip across the state, 10–14 days is ideal.
