New York

New York is consistently one of our family’s top five favorite states, and we find ourselves returning at least once each year in every season. While New York City is our go-to destination for a magical holiday experience, the rest of the state offers equally impressive beauty and variety throughout the year. From the vibrant energy of the city to the scenic state parks that shine during summer and fall foliage season, there is no shortage of memorable places to explore. Areas like the Finger Lakes and Niagara Falls are especially stunning in the warmer months and offer a perfect balance of nature, recreation, and small-town charm. No matter when you visit or what style of trip you prefer, New York makes it easy to build an unforgettable experience.

📅 Best Time to Visit

In my experience, New York is a great place to visit year-round, but each season delivers a very different trip. Fall is exceptional for foliage across upstate parks and mountain regions. Summer is ideal for lakes, vineyards, festivals, and Niagara Falls. Winter is perfect for a holiday trip to New York City and for skiing in mountain areas. Spring is excellent for city walking and park visits, though weather can be variable.

🧭 Regions of the State

There are three distinct and equally beautiful regions in Arizona. Northern Arizona is home to the Grand Canyon, Flagstaff, and dramatic high-desert landscapes. Central Arizona features Sedona’s red rocks and spiritual energy, while Southern Arizona offers desert beauty, rich history, and a slower pace centered around Tucson.

💰 Budget Friendly Tips in the city

Accommodations:

  • Hotels in Manhattan can be extremely expensive. To save money redeem travel points for free or reduced nights
  • Look for hotels in Brooklyn, Queens, or Jersey City — often cheaper while still close to subway lines.
  • Consider Airbnb or short-term rentals; renting a small apartment with a kitchen can save significantly on meals.
  • Book well in advance if traveling during peak seasons (holidays, summer, Fashion Week).

Food:

  • Take advantage of grab-and-go meals like pizza slices, bagels, or street vendors — NYC has countless affordable options.
  • Look for food halls (e.g., Chelsea Market, Urbanspace) where you can sample multiple foods without spending a fortune.
  • Grocery stores and delis can help you pack snacks or simple meals if you’re in a rental with a kitchen.

Transportation:

  • The subway is your best friend — it’s fast, affordable, and extensive. A 7-day unlimited MetroCard can save money if you’re doing multiple days of sightseeing.
  • Walking is often the fastest way to get around in areas like Midtown, Lower Manhattan, and Central Park.
  • Avoid taxis and ride-share for short distances; they are much more expensive than public transit.

Activities:

  • Many iconic spots have free or pay-what-you-wish options: museums like the American Museum of Natural History or the Met have suggested donation pricing.
  • Take advantage of free walking tours or self-guided neighborhood explorations (Central Park, Brooklyn Bridge, Greenwich Village).
  • Skip pricey observation decks if budget is tight; consider  free skyline views from “5 o’Clock Somewhere Bar”, above Margaritaville or Brooklyn Heights Promenade

💰 Budget Friendly Tips Outside of the city

Accommodations:

  • Renting a cabin, cottage, or vacation home can often be cheaper than hotels, especially if you have a kitchen. Preparing some of your meals reduces eating out every day while giving a scenic and comfortable stay.
  • State and regional parks sometimes offer camping or rustic cabins, which are affordable alternatives for families or outdoor enthusiasts.

Food:

  • Small towns and upstate areas often have family-owned diners, bakeries, and cafes where meals are cheaper than NYC.
  • Grocery stores are plentiful in most towns — packing picnic lunches for hikes or park visits can save significant money.

Transportation:

  • Renting a car is almost essential in upstate New York for flexibility, but you can save by using local transit, park shuttles, or ride shares in towns like Albany, Saratoga Springs, or Ithaca.
  • Plan your itinerary efficiently to avoid backtracking — fewer miles means less gas and lower stress.

Activities:

  • Nature is often free or low-cost: state parks, waterfalls, hiking trails, and scenic drives in the Adirondacks or Catskills.
  • Take advantage of local festivals, farmer’s markets, or historic sites — often inexpensive or donation-based.
  • Check for combo passes or discounts if visiting multiple attractions, such as museums or scenic railways.

🚗 Best Way to Experience This State

I’ve found that the best way to experience New York is to combine one major base with a regional side trip. New York City is best explored on foot and by subway, while the rest of the state is far more car-dependent. If you plan to visit areas like the Finger Lakes, Adirondacks, or Niagara Falls, renting a car is essential. Rail works well between major cities, but it won’t reach many scenic and park destinations.

⏱️ How Long You Really Need

I recommend allowing at least three to four days per region to truly experience what Arizona has to offer. Doing a bit of research ahead of time and identifying your “must-see” spots will help you plan more intentionally. Choose your home bases in regions with the highest concentration of things to do, and be sure to factor in drive time because in Arizona, the drive often becomes one of the highlights of the trip. Most importantly, resist the urge to overpack your days. Leave room to slow down, relax, and fully take in the beauty that surrounds you.

🌟 Worth the Hype (Iconic Experiences)
  • Statue of Liberty – A powerful, symbolic experience. Taking the ferry and seeing Lady Liberty up close feels far more meaningful in person than in photos.

  • Times Square – Overstimulating and crowded, but the neon lights at night create an unmistakable “only in New York” moment.

  • Niagara Falls – The sheer force and sound of the water is breathtaking. Walking along the American side offers dramatic views without crossing the border.

  • Central Park – An urban oasis. Whether you bike, picnic, or wander the pathways, it’s one of the best ways to experience Manhattan beyond skyscrapers.

  • Empire State Building – Classic skyline views from the observation deck, especially at sunset.

💎 Hidden Gems We Loved (Less Crowded, Equally Memorable)
  • Letchworth State Park – Known as the “Grand Canyon of the East,” this park features dramatic cliffs and waterfalls with significantly fewer crowds than Niagara.

  • Watkins Glen State Park – A stunning gorge trail with stone staircases winding past waterfalls and rock formations.

  • Lake George – A peaceful Adirondack lake perfect for kayaking, boating, or simply enjoying mountain scenery.

  • Storm King Art Center – A massive outdoor sculpture park set against rolling hills in the Hudson Valley.

  • Thousand Islands – Scenic boat tours through quiet waterways dotted with castles and cottages along the St. Lawrence River.

⚠️ Common Mistakes First-Time Visitors Make

Underestimating travel time – New York State is large — driving from NYC to Niagara Falls takes about 6–7 hours.

Overpacking your NYC itinerary – The city is best enjoyed with breathing room for wandering.

Underestimating seasonal weather – Fall evenings can be cold; summer humidity is intense; winter upstate requires snow readiness.

Skipping Upstate Entirely — missing some of the state’s most beautiful landscapes.
