Utah

Utah is, in my opinion, one of the five most beautiful states in the U.S., and it absolutely deserves a spot on every family’s bucket list. Beyond its iconic “Mighty 5” national parks, the state is filled with incredible hidden gems waiting to be explored. Whether you visit one park at a time or take them all on in a single adventure, it’s a trip you won’t forget.

Know Before You Go

📅 Best Time to Visit

Spring (April–May) and fall (September–October) are ideal, offering mild temperatures and fewer crowds. Summer is popular for families but can be extremely hot, especially in southern Utah near Zion National Park and Arches National Park. Winter is quieter and beautiful in places like Bryce Canyon National Park, but snow can impact access.

🧭 Regions of the State

Utah is often divided into distinct regions. Northern Utah includes Salt Lake City and surrounding mountains. Southern Utah is home to the famous “Mighty 5”: Zion National Park, Bryce Canyon National Park, Capitol Reef National Park, Arches National Park, and Canyonlands National Park. Eastern Utah (around Moab) is known for red rock landscapes, while central Utah offers scenic byways and fewer crowds.

💰 Budget Friendly Tips

Accommodations: Book early near national parks; lodging fills quickly. Stay in nearby towns like Moab or Springdale for convenience. Consider vacation rentals or budget motels to save money

Food: Expect higher prices near parks. Mix dining out with groceries or picnic meals. Pack snacks and water daily

Activities: Purchase an America the Beautiful Pass if visiting multiple parks. If your child is a 4th grader, download your pass for free. Many of the best experiences (hiking, viewpoints) are free. Plan ahead for permits like Angels Landing in Zion.

⚠️ Common Mistakes First-Time Visitors Make
  • Underestimating driving distances
  • Visiting in peak summer without planning for heat
  • Skipping reservations or timed entry requirements
  • Not starting days early (crowds + parking fill quickly)
  • Trying to do too much in too little time
  • Not bringing enough water (especially for hikes)
  • Not having the appropriate gear for hiking
🚗 Best Way to Experience This State

The best way to explore Utah is by car. It is a true “road trip” destination. Distances between parks and regions are significant, and many of the most scenic areas are only accessible by driving. Renting a car (or even an SUV for more remote areas) gives you the flexibility to stop at viewpoints, scenic pull-offs, and lesser-known spots along the way. Cities like Salt Lake City are easy to navigate, but public transportation is limited outside urban areas, so a car is essential for most itineraries.

⏱️ How Long You Really Need

To fully experience Utah, plan for 7–10 days to visit the Mighty 5 comfortably. With less time (5–6 days), you can still see highlights but should expect a faster pace. If you want to include hidden gems and slower travel, 10–14 days is ideal.
