Chattanooga: The Perfect Pitstop

My family and I had passed through Chattanooga more times than we could count, never realizing just how much beauty we were missing right off the highway. Sitting almost perfectly between Michigan and Florida, it had always been just a convenient midpoint on our map, until we finally decided to stop and truly explore it for our viewers. What we discovered completely surprised us. From the mountain views to the hidden underground wonders, Chattanooga turned out to be far more than a pass-through city, it’s a destination in its own right. No matter which direction you’re traveling, this is a place worth planning time for, and Ruby Falls stands out as one experience you absolutely shouldn’t miss.

Book in Advance

Our family highly recommends getting tickets in advance. Although we did purchase ours the day before during the off-season, we were not able to get the morning time slot we had hoped for. The best time slots often sell out, especially on weekends, holidays, and during peak travel seasons. For your convenience, I have added a direct link for buying tickets below.

Plan your Timing Carefully

A visit to Ruby Falls is not something you want to rush. Plan to arrive at least 15–20 minutes before your scheduled tour time to allow for parking and check-in, especially during peak seasons. The guided cave tour itself typically lasts about 1 to 1.5 hours. If you plan to explore the rest of Lookout Mountain, including scenic overlooks and nearby attractions,  budget at least half a day. Our family found that 3–4 hours total allowed for a relaxed experience without feeling hurried.

The Cave Tour

Ruby Falls maintains a steady 60°F year-round, so a light jacket is helpful (though we were comfortable in long sleeves), and because the paved path can be damp, uneven, and slightly inclined over the nearly one-mile round trip, closed-toe shoes are a must—especially with the cave’s dramatic, low lighting. The experience is very family-friendly, but preparation matters: tours are guided, children must stay with the group, the walk can feel long for little ones, and strollers are not allowed. That said, the illuminated waterfall reveal is a magical highlight that our kids absolutely loved.

Visit Lookout Mountain

Lookout Mountain offers much more than a single attraction and is well worth exploring on its own. Visitors can expect scenic overlooks, easy walking paths, and sweeping views that stretch across Tennessee and into neighboring states on clear days. Parking areas can fill quickly, especially on weekends, and depending on your plans, you may need to take short drives between different viewpoints and attractions..

Other Chattanooga Adventures

Chattanooga has plenty of great outdoor experiences for families beyond Ruby Falls and Lookout Mountain. Rock City Gardens is always a favorite thanks to its easy walking trail, kid-friendly storybook areas, and incredible views. Right nearby, the Lookout Mountain Incline Railway gives families a fun and very steep ride up the mountain that kids usually love.

For history paired with scenery, Point Park offers short, manageable walking paths and beautiful overlooks that are easy to enjoy with children. If your family is up for a bit more adventure, Cloudland Canyon State Park is worth the short drive into Georgia, with waterfalls, scenic rim views, and family-friendly trails that can be adjusted based on your comfort level.
